ALL ABOUT THE ART

1/12/2017

Comments

I really threw myself into it this year, after going overseas last year I came home inspired and determined to put myself out there and began painting again. Before the end of 2016 I had painted three paintings for a Christmas Exhibition at Red Poles, another two paintings for the annual Surf Art Exhibition in Pt Noarlunga and registered myself to take part in the Adelaide Fringe  and the South Australian Living Artists (SALA)  Festival for 2017. (two solo exhibitions, an open studio/workshops and a group exhibition) Life; once again became crazy, busy and every minute between working in an art supplies store, teaching art classes and looking after grand kids and running a household was spent in the studio ... minus a few winery visits, a few social events here & there and oh, manged to fit in a girls weekend in Melbourne too ( only just)
The SALA event at the Barn "Off the Block" was absolutely exhausting but well worth doing and so much fun. Thank you to all those that popped by to chat, to look and buy some work and to those that took part in learning  & experimenting with making collagraphs. It was really nice to meet and see you all, I appreciate all your comments, feed back and company...thank you xxxx

Gifts of Fun & Love

This is an exhibition of linocuts, collagraphs, etchings, paintings and mixed media-illustraitive through to abstract and somewhat quirky.  Inspired by the imagination and life's moments of wishful thinking.

Aldgate Cafe 6 Strathalbyn Rd, Aldgate
17 February - 30 March 2017
Monday - Wednesday 4pm - 8.30pm
Thursday - Sunday 11.30 - 9pm

So it's been a few years since I last had a solo exhibition. Still something to do with that sea change / tree change part of my life I think? 2016 was a year of adjustments, making plans and taking action. Most exciting of all was taking a trip overseas and after spending a few weeks in New York and Canada, sightseeing and absorbing as much culture, art and architecture; I returned home with an enthusiasm to  get my art back out into the world!  Well back out into my local world at least...  and how else but to do this than to take part in one of South Australia's biggest arts festivals... The Adelaide Fringe. With only days before the deadline I sat for hours on end filling in the paperwork and informing them of as much information I could think of for an exhibition that had barely been thought of only hours earlier. Somehow I did it and "Gifts of Fun & Love ' came into fruition. A title reflecting how I was feeling about current life.  Over the next few months, I put together a body of work and painted a few new works which could be seen as being  'little parcels' I wanted to share the fun & love and hopefully the viewers will get that when they look at the work.  Maybe even  share them  as gifts with their loved ones.

AMERICA, canada & Beyond

September this year, Steve & I set off on a trip I never thought would happen. Of all places... we were off to  America, to "The Big Apple"  New York City.  We booked accommodation in Chelsea, Manhattan a reasonable price in comparison for the location & time of year but for that price ... the smallest apartment  you could imagine.  We weren't there much anyway; after all we were in  "the city that never sleeps' Here are just a few images taken from the streets and galleries.

What a year!!

As you can see by my lack of blogging, this year has absolutely flown by. Feeling bad about my lack of connection with you, yet wanting to share what an amazing year 2015 has been I was trying to think of the best and quickest way I could share this with you? There is no easy answer to this, so before this year comes to an end I thought I'd better just get on with it.
It certainly has been another year of change, very different to 'the sea change' of last year. 2014 brought some really exciting times, new experiences, new places to explore, new inspirations and lessons to be learnt.
I'm putting together a visual diary, I'll keep it simple, Obviously the images won't have the same meaning to you but hopefully you'll just enjoy them for what they are. So as I try to capture some moments and reflect on my experience over the past two years, I wish everyone all the best for the year ahead. I know Christmas is not always a wonderful time for everybody but I do wish you a beautiful Christmas in some way or another.
I'm not sure whose quote this is but it's said that  "We must take adventures, in order to know where we truly belong." and at this moment in time, I sure am happy with where that is.

Market Stall in Redcliffe, Qld

25/11/2014

Comments

I'm looking forward to taking part in this market, since moving to Brisbane the Redcliffe area has been one of my favourite places to visit.  It's only about 15 minutes away from home and every Sunday the Redcliffe Parade, which is right on the coast, is closed off and comes alive with music and its regular stalls. One of my favourites is the one that sells a huge range of herbs & spices, just love the smells. During the week it takes on a whole different atmosphere, much more relaxed, nostalgic arcades filled with little shops and galleries, a mix of the contemporary and the past.
Handmade Redcliffe
Our mini Christmas design market is on this Saturday at the Redcliffe Library Gallery. There will be homemade lemonade, the coffee cart will be open, jam, fresh herbs, honey and beautiful artisanal gifts from our local makers to explore.

Gotta love Collagraphs

Okay so this time last year while I was back in Adelaide I did a workshop at Bittondi with Sarah Amos, she's a Melbourne born artist but lives and works in the United States. I was so inspired as I have always loved the 'somewhat unpredictable' marks and textures of the collagraph. I say 'somewhat' because of course it does take practice and experience to create the desired effects but it's a medium where you can really experiment and more often than not you will have 'happy accidents'
Sarah works on life size prints and she combines painting with overprinting of intaglio collagraphs and the final prints are large, bold and abstract. Her press is huge and her studio , amazing.
As for me, I am in a total opposite situation. Renting a townhouse with white floor tiles, working in a small dining room and printing on a press which is situated in the garage which does need to house my car as well. It just means I have to move things around and pack everything away at the end of the day. Not ideal but it's only now that I have found the time to work on trying out this technique. It's fine and this way it's not as expensive when those 'accidents' aren't so happy. As usual I'm never just working on one thing and while mucking around with inks and various blocks I also have a deadline to meet as I'm taking part in an international printmaking exchange and exhibition-Bears and Blooms. The Exhibition will be held at Red Poles opening on October 18th and the theme is' Postcards from the edge of extinction, documenting rare, endangered or extinct flora or fauna species.  Proceeds of the exhibition will be donated to Free the Beers Fund www.freethebears.org.au

Market Stall & The Fringe Poster Competion

6/9/2014

Comments

The last couple of months have been really busy. I have enjoyed painting a new series of little canvases, they're only 10 x 10 cms in size but they still took ages to paint. That's the thing with little works, sometimes they take just as much time to create as the large pieces because they're so fiddly to do, they just use less materials.  These are just a few but I'm fairly happy with the designs, I need to make a few changes & I have so many more ideas.  Now  I'm thinking I might make them into linocuts as well. ... who knows,  I do like the brightness of the paints and I haven't painted since moving here to Brisbane. I sold the Glass House Mountains & the Kookaburra, I'd like to be able to do enough to provide some touristy galleries around Queensland. All in all it was a lot of work to prepare for the stall and as this was a school fair it probably wasn't the most ideal place for sales of my work but I knew that. I was hoping to drum up some interest for some art classes and basically a bit of exposure into a new community and I did get to meet some lovely and interesting people.
So last weekend on Sunday was the fair &  Tuesday I decide it's not too late for me to still try and get an entry in for the Adelaide Fringe Poster Competition by Friday.  Okay so I am pushing my luck & I'm up against a whole mob of young talented designers but the theme is " Experience Something New " and I've decided to go with " Why not Wear a bird as a Wig " It's nonsense but that's what they want. I think I'm good at nonsense. If I don't make it well other than the fact that I miss out on a much needed $2,000 and an amazing amount of exposure for my work I now have a whole new series of work I'm inspired to do for an exhibition for The Fringe.

paper arrival and new work

19/8/2014

Monday 18/8/14

My paper and large lino squares have just arrived from Melbourne and I’m eager to get on with drawing and printing some new designs. The bigger lino is something new as I’ve always just worked in 15 x 15cm or 30 x30cm squares so lookout for something new, hopefully not too far away.

I’ve got my first market stall coming up at the end of August. It’s at the St Dympna’s School Fair in Aspley so for those that can …Come on down! Or come on up, depends where you are … it's North of Brisbane anyway. Have been printing and colouring lots of linocuts and still have to make up more cards. Packaging takes time too but I’m looking forward to this event.  Have also done some bright little canvases inspired by my new Queensland environment.

St Dympna’s School Fair

Sunday 31st August from 10.30am – 3.30pm

The Primary School, Robinson Road, Aspley

Steve’s made me a print stand and I think I’ll ask him to make another. Aside from brewing beer he’s managed to find his creative side and other than my stand he’s made a table and some chairs from old pallets and some of the drums that get used for the malt at the brewery. The Brewing Hub will also set up their first market stall too.

Today however I am about to go and post off my collagraphs- The Dog & Beach series. Art Images at Norwood in Adelaide have sold some more of my works so I’m working on topping up their stock. I recently sent them linocuts from the series “Lovers’ and “Home Sweet Home” so for those in SA you can always find my work there as well. www.artimagesgallery.com.au
